Written music lives on a set of five lines called the stave (some people call it the staff — same thing). The five lines, and the four spaces between them, are where the notes sit. A note that sits high on the stave sounds high. A note low down sounds low. So the page works a bit like a staircase: as your eye climbs upward, the sound climbs with it. That up-and-down — how high or low a note is — has a name. It is called pitch.
Nothing about the stave is decorative. Every line and every space means a specific note. Before any of those notes have names, it helps to see the empty stave on its own — five lines, four spaces, counted from the bottom up.
There is one rule that saves a lot of confusion: lines and spaces are always counted from the bottom upwards. The bottom line is line 1; the line just above the bottom is line 2, and so on up to line 5 at the top. The same for the spaces.
The five-line stave is roughly a thousand years old. Before it, singers learned whole services by ear, passed mouth to mouth — a single cathedral's worth of chant could take a lifetime to memorise. The lines meant a tune could finally be written down once and read by anyone.
On its own, the stave is just five blank lines — it doesn't tell you which note is which yet. That job belongs to the curly symbol drawn at the very start of the stave: the treble clef. It is the most common clef, used for higher instruments and for the right hand of the piano, and it is the one you will read most often.
The treble clef is also called the G clef, and there is a lovely reason why. The curl in the middle of the symbol loops tightly around one line — the second line from the bottom — and that curl is pointing out, "this line is the note G." Once you know where G sits, every other note can be counted from it. The clef is the key that unlocks the page.
If you look closely at a treble clef, the whole shape grew, over centuries, out of a hand-written letter G. The curl ended up wrapping the G line on purpose. That is why musicians often start reading a treble stave by finding G first, then stepping up or down from there.
There is more than one clef. Lower instruments like the cello and the left hand of the piano often use the bass clef, which is shaped from the letter F and marks a much lower note. The treble clef and bass clef are simply two different windows onto the same keyboard — one for the high notes, one for the low.
Music uses just seven letters for its notes — A, B, C, D, E, F, G — and then it starts again at A. On the treble stave, those letters land on the lines and spaces in a fixed pattern you can learn with two little memory tricks.
Reading upwards from the bottom line, the five lines spell E · G · B · D · F. The four spaces, again from the bottom up, spell the word F · A · C · E — which is handy, because it spells "face".

"Every Good Boy Deserves Football" is only the best-known version of the line mnemonic — musicians around the world invent their own. Some say "Every Green Bus Drives Fast"; others, "Empty Garbage Before Dad Flips." Any sentence whose words begin E, G, B, D, F will do the job.
Sometimes a note is too low or too high to fit on the five lines. Rather than add more lines for everyone, music draws a tiny line just for that one note — a short stub called a ledger line. The most famous note that needs one sits just below the bottom line of the treble stave: it is middle C.
Middle C is a useful landmark because it sits roughly in the middle of a piano keyboard, between the treble notes above and the bass notes below. On the page, you write it on its own short ledger line, hanging just under the stave. From middle C, you can step upward — D in the space below the bottom line, then E on the bottom line itself, and you are back on familiar ground.
A ledger line is a little extra line, the length of one note, added above or below the stave for a note that won't fit on the five. You only draw as many as that single note needs — they are not part of the main stave.
Middle C earns its name twice over. On a piano it sits near the very middle of the keyboard, and on paper it falls exactly halfway between the treble clef above and the bass clef below — the one note both clefs can almost reach. It is the hinge the two halves of the keyboard turn on.
So far the dots have told you which note to play. They also tell you how long to hold it — and that is shown by the note's shape. A note can be a hollow ring or a filled dot; it can have a stem (the tail going up or down) or not; and it can have a flag (a little hook on the stem). Each combination is worth a set number of beats — the steady pulse you tap your foot to.
Music is sliced into equal chunks called bars (also called measures). A thin vertical line — a bar line — marks the end of each one. Bars keep the beat tidy, so your eye always knows where one group of beats ends and the next begins.
How many beats go in each bar is set by two numbers stacked at the very start, just after the clef: the time signature. The most common one is 4/4. The top number says how many beats are in each bar — four. The bottom number says what kind of beat — here, crotchet beats. So 4/4 means four crotchet beats in every bar. A bar in 4/4 could be four crotchets, or two minims, or one semibreve — any combination that adds up to four.
And music needs silence as well as sound. A gap where you play nothing is written with a rest. A rest has a value, just like a note: a crotchet rest is one beat of quiet, counted just as carefully as a beat you play.
Count "one — two — three — four" steadily for each bar. Play a crotchet on a beat you count; stay silent on a beat marked with a rest. When you reach four, you've filled the bar and the bar line tells you to start counting again at one.
Four notes are sitting on the treble stave below, each with a numbered pin. Pick a letter-name chip and place it on the matching pin. Use the tricks: lines spell E G B D F, spaces spell F A C E. Two of the chips are not notes at all — read before you place them.

Imagine a friend who has never read music. In a few sentences, tell them what the five lines are for, what "pitch" means, and one trick for remembering the line names or the space names. Use the words you met today — stave, pitch, treble clef, line, space. Five or six sentences is plenty.
