The First World War brought weapons the world had
never seen — the machine gun, vast artillery, the tank, the
aeroplane. They changed how the war was fought, and why it was
so hard to win.

The problem
Why the war got stuck.
When the First World War began in 1914, generals expected a
war of movement — armies marching, cavalry charging, battles won
and lost in weeks. Instead, within months, the fighting on the
Western Front ground to a halt. Two long lines of
trenches faced each other across a strip of churned ground
called no man's land, stretching all the way from the
Belgian coast to the border of Switzerland.
The reason for the deadlock was, above all, the new
technology of defence. A handful of soldiers behind cover,
with machine guns and barbed wire, could stop a much larger
attacking force crossing open ground. Attacking became far more
costly than defending. The war got stuck — and most of the new
weapons of 1914 to 1918 were attempts, by both sides, to break
that deadlock.

The weapons of defence
The machine gun and the big guns.
Two weapons, more than any others, made attacking so deadly:
the machine gun and the artillery gun.
The machine gun
A single gun that fired bullets in a fast, continuous stream
rather than one at a time.
Two soldiers could sweep a wide area of no man's land,
stopping an advance before it crossed.
It is a major reason that attacks on foot, over open ground,
cost so many lives.
The artillery
Huge guns that fired explosive shells from miles behind the
line.
Used to pound the enemy's trenches before an attack — but
the shells often failed to clear the barbed wire.
Artillery, not rifles, caused the largest share of the
war's casualties.

A weapon that horrified
Poison gas — and why it was so feared.
One of the most feared weapons of the war was poison gas,
first used on a large scale in 1915. Released from canisters or
fired in shells, it drifted across no man's land in a cloud.
Soldiers had little defence at first, and the gas caused great
suffering. It is a sober part of this history, and worth
understanding rather than dwelling on.
Gas turned out to be an unreliable weapon. It depended
entirely on the wind — and the wind could turn, blowing the
cloud back over the soldiers who had released it. Quite soon,
both sides issued gas masks, and these gave good
protection. For all the fear it caused, gas accounted for a
relatively small share of the war's deaths. Its real power was
the dread of it.
Why a fearsome weapon faded
Gas frightened everyone, but it rarely decided a battle.
It was unpredictable, it could blow back on its own side, and
once gas masks were issued the danger fell sharply. After the
war, the world was so disturbed by it that many countries agreed,
in 1925, to ban its use — one of the first international rules of
its kind.

The weapons of attack
The tank and the aeroplane.
If the machine gun and the wire favoured the defender, the
tank was Britain's answer for the attacker. First used in
1916, the tank was an armoured machine that moved on
caterpillar tracks, letting it cross rough ground and
trenches, crush barbed wire, and carry its own guns forward while
protecting the crew inside. Early tanks were slow and often broke
down, but they pointed to the future of warfare.

Above the battlefield, the aeroplane came of age. At the
war's start, flimsy aircraft were used mainly for
reconnaissance — flying over enemy lines to see what was
there and to direct the artillery. By the war's end, aircraft
had become fighting machines in their own right, with the famous
dogfights between pilots high above the trenches. Aviation
advanced more in those four years than in the decade before.
Worth knowing
The word "tank" began as a secret. To hide
what the new machines were while they were being built, the
British called them "water tanks" or "water carriers" for
Russia — and the cover name stuck. We have been calling them
tanks ever since.

Write · a letter home
A soldier writes home, 1916.
Imagine you are a soldier in a trench, writing a short letter
home to your family. You have seen the new machines of this war
— the guns, perhaps a tank going forward for the first time. Real
soldiers often wrote carefully, not wanting to frighten the people
they loved. Write a letter that is honest but kind: tell them what
the war is like, without dwelling on the worst of it.
Keep it to one voice and one moment. 120–180 words is plenty,
Florence. Think about what a person would, and wouldn't, choose
to say.

Glossary
The words from today.
No man's land
The open, dangerous strip of ground between the two opposing trench lines.
Stalemate
A deadlock in which neither side can make a breakthrough, as on the Western Front for most of the war.
Artillery
Large guns that fire explosive shells over long distances; the war's biggest cause of casualties.
Caterpillar track
A loop of linked metal plates running round a tank, letting it cross trenches and rough ground.
Reconnaissance
Scouting to gather information; early war aircraft did this by flying over enemy lines.
Sponson
A box on the side of an early tank that held a gun.
