Pick up a pair of scissors. You have never been taught how to hold them, yet your fingers find the loops without a thought. The shape of the object tells your hand what to do. That is no accident — it is the mark of good design. A well-designed thing explains itself, works without a manual, and feels obvious only because someone worked very hard to make it so.
For more than a century, designers have tried to put the idea into words. The most famous phrase is form follows function: the form (the shape, the look) should grow out of the function (the job it has to do). A teapot is shaped the way it is because it must hold liquid, pour without dribbling, and stay cool enough to lift. Decide what a thing must do, and the right shape follows.
Ask three quiet questions. Does it work well — does it do its job without fuss? Is it honest — does it look like what it is, rather than pretending to be something else? Will it last — will you still want it, and still be able to use it, in ten years? A design that answers yes to all three rarely goes out of style.
The humble paperclip has barely changed since the 1890s. Designers have tried for over a century to improve it — fancier bends, clever clips, new materials — and almost every redesign has failed. The original looping shape does its one job so well that there is simply nothing left to fix. Good design can be very hard to beat.
In 1919, in the German town of Weimar, an architect named Walter Gropius opened a school with a startling idea. It was called the Bauhaus — roughly, "the house of building." Gropius believed the old wall between fine art (painting, sculpture) and craft (making chairs, weaving cloth, printing) should be torn down. A painter and a carpenter, he said, should learn side by side, and design things that ordinary people could afford and use.
The school moved twice — from Weimar to the town of Dessau in 1925, where Gropius built it the famous glass-walled home above, and finally to Berlin. It lasted only fourteen years. In 1933 the Nazi government, which hated its modern, international spirit, forced it to close. But by then its teachers and students were scattering across the world, carrying its ideas with them — and those ideas would shape almost everything designed afterwards.
The Bauhaus only ran for fourteen years and taught fewer than 1,300 students in total — a tiny school. Yet today the word is on T-shirts, fonts, furniture catalogues and a famous band's name. Few schools anywhere have shaped how the world looks more, per student, than this one short-lived German experiment.

Some designs are so right that they are still made, still bought, still copied, decades after they appeared. Look at four of them. Each solved its problem so cleanly that nobody has needed to start again.
Marcel Breuer, at the Bauhaus, looked at his bicycle's handlebars and had an idea: build a chair from bent steel tubes. Light, strong, factory-made — and unlike anything before it. Still in production today.
A car engineer, George Carwardine, worked out how to make springs hold a lamp in any position you nudge it to — like a human arm that stays where you leave it. Nearly a century on, it still sits on desks everywhere.
Harry Beck, an electrical draughtsman, drew the Tube not as it really is but as a circuit diagram — straight lines, neat angles, clear colours. It was easier to read than the truth, and every metro map in the world has copied it since.
At the German firm Braun, designer Dieter Rams stripped radios and record players back to calm, plain boxes — and wrote ten rules for good design that designers still quote. Apple's look owes him a great deal.
When Harry Beck first showed his diagram-style Tube map in 1931, London Transport rejected it — they thought it was too strange and not geographically true. They printed a small trial run anyway. It sold out almost at once, and they never went back. Beck was paid just a few guineas for one of the most copied designs on Earth.
In the 1970s, surrounded by cheap, noisy, badly made products, the German designer Dieter Rams stopped and asked himself a simple question: is my design good design? To answer it, he wrote down ten principles. They have become one of the most quoted lists in all of design. You do not need to memorise them — but read them, and notice how many begin with the same quiet idea: good design does its job, and gets out of the way.

Rams summed up his whole philosophy in three German words: Weniger, aber besser — "less, but better." Not less for the sake of being plain, but less so that what remains can do its job perfectly. Strip away everything that does not earn its place, and the thing that is left works, and lasts.
Rams' tenth rule — "as little design as possible" — is the hardest of all to follow. It is far easier to add a button, a stripe, a logo, than to take one away. Designers call the discipline of removing things editing, and most agree it is the rarest skill in the trade. Anyone can add; very few know what to leave out.

Choose one object you use often — a pencil, a kettle, your phone, a pair of trainers, a chair. Make the case that it is well designed. The move that lifts an answer is using the ideas from today: does it follow form follows function? Does it match any of Rams' principles — useful, honest, long-lasting, "as little design as possible"? A strong answer also names one thing you would change.
Name your object, then make the case — using at least one idea from today, with a reason. End with one thing you would change. 120–180 words is plenty, Florence. No rush.

try this One sentence does two jobs at once, so the reasoning gets a little buried. When the worry creeps in that you have not said enough, one idea can stretch into a long sentence. Give each idea its own short sentence and the thinking stands out clearly.
to add You have the praise; now name one fault. Even the best designs have a weak spot — a handle that gets hot, a button in the wrong place. Adding "the one thing I would change is …" turns admiration into a designer's judgement. That is the part worth reaching for next time.
